Glenwood Alonzo Turner Jr. Obituary (1924 - 2011)

SKOWHEGAN- Glenwood A. Turner Jr. 87, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sept. 30, 2011, at his home in Skowhegan with his family at his side. He was born May 28, 1924, in Salem, NH., the son of Glenwood A. Turner Sr. and June (Packard) Turner. Glenwood married Henriette (Henny) Debertin in June of 1948 in Frankfurt, Germany. After working several jobs he began his career working for Ralph Dunlop driving the Milk Can Truck for several years. Ralph Dunlop sold his business to Blaine Richardson where Glenwood then drove the Bulk Milk Truck for 25 years. After retiring, he drove part time for Gifford’s hauling milk. He also worked for the Skowhegan Police Department as a school crossing guard. He is a past member of the Sno-Hawks Snowmobile Club in Skowhegan. He always had a garden, a vegetable stand and he grew potatoes to give to the Methodist Church in Skowhegan. He had a passion for working, loved spending time with his family and enjoyed taking the family to the drive in movies. He served in the U.S Army during WWII. He was included in the second wave at Normandy in Northern France. He also was involved in Rhineland in Central Europe. He was wounded twice during WWII and received 2 purple hearts. He also guarded General Eisenhower’s train as it toured Europe during the Occupation. He reenlisted to return to Germany so he could marry his sweetheart, Henny. He is survived by his wife Henriette of 63 years of Skowhegan; his four children, Gerald Turner and his wife Diane of N. Anson, Christina Smith and her life partner Tommy Forshey of Altoona, PA., Michael Turner of Skowhegan, David Turner and his wife Debra of Anson; three brothers, Louis Turner and his wife Natalie of Skowhegan, Wayne Turner and his wife Peggy of South Carolina, Richard Turner and his wife Carole of Texas; three sisters, Charlene Soucier of Skowhegan, Glenna Shelp and her husband Donald of FL., Marilyn Rich and her husband Berwin of Madison; grandchildren, Tiffany, Gabriel, Andy, Terry, Dustin, Brent, Melinda, Courtney, Jakob; step granddaughter, Denise ; great grandson, Cameron; step great grandchildren, Tyler, Ticy, Telena. He was predeceased by his son, Stephen Turner; one sister Maxine Gower; two brother-in-laws Richard Soucier, Norman Gower. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2011 from 2 p.m. – 4p.m. and 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home. 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A Funeral Service will be held on Oct. 5, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Faith Baptist Church 19 Washburn Lane, Skowhegan with Pastor Steve Conley and Pastor Louis Turner, interment will follow at the East Skowhegan Cemetery.
